Conjectural model of the pres used by Johannes Gutenberg (c 1398-1468). Gutenberg was a German goldsmith who invented a method of making type of individual letters from molten metal known as typecasting. In 1455 he produced the first large printed book, the 'Gutenberg Bible'.
