William M Gowland, English engine driver, mid 19th century.

Description

Gowland (d 1875) drove the steam locomotives 'Royal George' and 'Sans Pareil', both designed by Timothy Hackworth. 'Sans Pareil' was entered in the Rainhill Trials in 1829, a competition to establish the most efficient locomotive for railway haulage; the competition was won by George Stephenson's 'Rocket'.
