George Stephenson became principal engineer of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world's first intercity line, in 1826, and after a competition was organised in 1829 at Rainhill to determine the most efficient locomotive engine, Robert Stephenson's 'Rocket' was declared the winner.
