The locomotive represented by this conjectural coloured drawing (scale 1:8) was designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859) and George Stephenson (1781-1848). Named the 'Rocket', it won the Rainhill Trials of 1829, a competition set up to find the most efficient locomotive for haulage on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. This drawing shows the version three scale model, drawn for museum display by the Science Museum in c 1955.
