Etching of Sir Samuel Cunard (1787-1865) with Cunard's signature. Emigrated to Britain in 1838, Cunard founded, with others, the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1839. The first voyage was made the following year taking the 'Britannia' 14 days and eight hours. The company was later to be known as the Cunard Line.
