Samuel Franklin Cody (1861-1913). American-born Cody invented the manlifting kite as a means for military observation. On 16 October 1908 he made the first powered flight in Britain in his British Army aeroplane No. 1, using a 50-hp Antoinette engine. Photograph of Cody wearing a flying helmet, 1912. Cody (1861-1913) was the American-born inventor of the man-lifting kite, which he developed as a means of military observation. On 16 October 1908 he made the first powered flight in Britain in his British Army aeroplane No 1, using a 50 hp Antoinette engine. He was killed in a flying accident in 1913.
