This coloured scale drawing by Thomas Coates shows a cross-sectional diagram of a 'London Brigade Vertical' steam fire engine made by Shand Mason & Co. This single cylinder engine was patented by James Shand in 1863. The 'London Brigade Vertical' was the standard type of horse-drawn fire engine until it was superseded by the double vertical engine in 1889.
