Portrait after an oil painting of 1778 by L Pasch at Uppsala Univerisy. Torbern Olof Bergman (1735-1784) was a profesor at Uppsala University from 1758. He discovered hydrogen sulphide in mineral springs by using carbon dioxide to prepare artificial mineral waters. Bergman pioneered improvements in chemical analysis, and made important discoveries in the theory of crystal structure.
