Railway Guards Universal Friendly Society membership certificate of Henry Lee, of Bishopsgate District, dated 6 January 1850. Friendly societies developed in Britain to provide mutual benefit to their members and their families in the event of illnes, disability or unemployment, and to provide pensions after retirement.
