Engineer, explorer and scientist Benjamin Babbage (1815-1878) was the eldest son of computer pioneer Charles Babbage (1791-1871). After working on civil engineering projects under both William Chadwell Mylne and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Babbage went to South Australia to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey (1851-1852). He remained in south Australia as, amongst other things, the commisioner of gold licences (1852-1853), a railway builder and the leader of an expedition that explored Lakes Torrens and Gairdner.
