Artists impression of a Defense Satellite Communications System 2 in geostationary earth orbit. The DSCS 2 was one of a series of communications satellites used by the United States military throughout the 1970s and 1980s. These satellites were 'hardened' to resist both jamming and the effects of nearby nuclear explosions.
