Scott was photographed by Rusell Schweickart as he emerged from the hatch of the Apollo 9 Command Module in Earth orbit to undertake Extravehicular Activity (EVA) during the March 1969 mision. The Apollo Command and Service Module is docked with the Lunar Module. Apollo 9 was launched on 3rd March 1969, with astronauts James McDivitt, Scott and Schweickart on board. Apollo 9 carried the first complete Apollo spacecraft into Earth orbit, and the first docking of the Apollo Command and Service Module with the Lunar Module was carried out on the mision. The two modules are docked together in this picture.
