Print from a coloured drawing by Geoffrey Wheeler showing a side elevation of George Stephenson's (1781-1848) 0-4-0 locomotive 'Locomotion'. Built in 1825, 'Locomotion' was the first locomotive to run on the Stockton & Darlington Railway, the world's first public steam railway, which opened in the same year. In September 1825, it hauled the special train which opened the railway, and was later used to haul freight wagons and a passenger carriage called the 'Experiment'.
