The SME satellite, launched on 6th October 1981, was part of the US Explorer programme, a series of low-cost satellites devoted to specific scientific objectives. The Solar Mesophere Explorer was used for atmospheric research, specifically the proceses involved in the creation and destruction of ozone in the upper atmosphere. SME continued to return data to Earth until 1989.
