The Surveyor soft lander spacecraft is shown under test conditions, being suspended by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) technicians over the horizon near Hughes Aircraft Company, Culver City, California. Surveyor 3, launched on 17th April 1967, landed in the area of the Moon known as the Ocean of Storms and made the first excavation on the lunar surface using an on-board scoop. The Surveyor programme was one of three precursor unmanned lunar exploration programmes designed to pave the way for the Apollo manned Moon landings.
