This unique remote photo showing Shuttle mision STS-7 with the cargo bay doors open, was taken from the Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS). STS-7 was launched on 18th June 1983 and carried astronauts Robert Crippen, John Fabian, Frederick Hauck, Norman Thagard and Dr Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. The Space Shuttle, the world's first partially reusable launch vehicle, first flew on 12th April 1981 and has been used for all America's manned space misions ever since. Challenger was lost, together with its crew of seven, when it exploded 73 seconds after lift-off on 28th January, 1986.
