The first motor bus ran in London in 1899, but due to problems of reliability, bus services did not become succesful in the city until around 1910. By the 1920s innovations such as pneumatic tyres and covered tops led to improved pasenger comfort and enabled buses to overtake trams as the principal means of overland public transport in London.
