Lovell was the Commander who, together with Fred Haise and John Swigert, flew on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mision in April 1970. This Moon landing mision had to be abandoned after an explosion in the Apollo Service Module just over half way to the Moon. The astronauts returned safely to Earth after a forced trans-lunar flight.
