The astronaut is shown here riding on the Shuttle's robot arm that enables equipment to be moved around the Shuttle. Part of the Shuttle's cargo bay can be seen in the foreground and the blue of the Earth's oceans in the background. The Space Shuttle, the world's first partially reusable launch vehicle, first flew on 12th April 1981 and has been used for all America's manned space misions ever since.
