Apollo 7, with astronauts Walter Schirra, Walter Cunningham and Donn Eisele aboard, was launched from the Kennedy Space Centre, Cape Canaveral, Florida, on 11th October 1968. It carried the Apollo Command and Service Module, extensively modified following the fatal fire during testing on Apollo 1 which killed astronauts Virgil 'Gus' Grisom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee in January 1967, for a succesful test into Earth orbit. This was the first manned launch of the Saturn 1B rocket and the first manned Apollo mision. For the Apollo misions which actually went to the Moon, the larger Saturn V rocket was used.
