This picture was taken from the Applications Test Satellite 3 (ATS3), launched on 5th November 1967 into a geostationary orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. These were the first ever colour photographs of the Earth from space. The ATS satellites were designed to conduct meteorological experiments, develop experimental geostationary orbit techniques, and transmit meteorological information to ground stations.
