Clockwise from top left; the White House, President Andrew Johnson, the Treasury, the Old Capitol, Statue of George Washington, the Patent Office. From the album asembled by John Downes Rochfort. Rochfort toured the United States and Canada in 1867, visiting all the major American Civil War sites, and some of the photographs he purchased en route have since become some of that war's best known images. Up to this time war had been portrayed as a series of heroic tableaux; the images in Rochfort's album revealed its realities for the first time.
