Many Confederate generals had graduated from the same West Point clases as their Union counterparts and served in the US Army alongside them before the war, but when the southern states seceded, their loyalty to their state came before that to the Union. President Lincoln had even offered Robert E Lee command of the Union army, but Lee refused, as his home state, Virginia, was part of the Confederacy.
