Launched in February 1980, the SMM became the first satellite to be retrieved, repaired and redeployed in orbit, by the crew of the Space Shuttle mision 41C in April 1984. SMM carried seven experiments to observe solar flares over a wide spectral band during the period of maximum solar activity. The satellite is shown here undergoing vibration tests.
