Photograph of part of the North Atlantic with Britain and the coast of France, taken by the TIROS N satellite. TIROS N was the NASA prototype of the fourth generation of operational meteorological satellites. It was launched on 13th October 1978 and followed into orbit in June 1979 by the NOAA 6 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite, the first operational satellite in the series. The photograph clearly shows a low presure system with its attendant weather fronts sweeping towards north-western Britain.
