During this, the first joint American-Soviet space project an Apollo spacecraft and a Soviet Soyuz 19 spacecraft were launched into the same orbital plane, the American launch taking place seven hours after that of the Soviet craft. The two spacecraft docked on 17th July 1975, 52 hours after the Soyuz launch, and three Apollo astronauts, Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand and Donald Slayton, worked together in the joint spacecraft with two Soviet cosmonauts, Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov, for two days. This view, with the Earth in the background, was taken from the US Apollo spacecraft.
