This false colour map, obtained using data from the Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) aboard the Nimbus 5 satellite shows the temperature distribution over the Arctic during the summer of 1973. Red is the warmest, white the coldest. The United Kingdom can be seen in the lower right corner of the image. Nimbus was a series of experimental meteorological and earth resources satellites. Nimbus 5 was launched on 11th December 1972 carrying experiments to obtain the first vertical temperature and water vapour profiles of the Earth's atmosphere through clouds. Seven Nimbus satellites were launched between August 1963 and October 1978.
