Nimbus was a series of experimental meteorological and earth resources satellites. Nimbus 5 was launched on 11th December 1972 carrying experiments to obtain the first vertical temperature and water vapour profiles of the Earth's atmosphere through clouds. Seven Nimbus satellites were launched between August 1963 and October 1978.
