Mattingly flew as the Command and Service Module pilot with astronauts David Scott and John Young on the Apollo 16 mision to the Moon in April 1972. Mattingly remained in lunar orbit in the Command and Service Module while Young and Scott descended to the surface to become the 9th and 10th men to walk on the Moon. Mattingly later flew on Space Shuttle misions 4 and 15.
