Description

The picture was taken in Earth orbit from the Apollo 9 Command Module which had already detached from the third stage of the Saturn V rocket. The Apollo 9 Command and Service Module then docked with the Lunar Module and pulled it clear of the rocket. Apollo 9 was launched on 3rd March 1969, with astronauts James McDivitt, David Scott and Rusell Schweickart on board. Apollo 9 carried the first complete Apollo spacecraft into Earth orbit, and the first docking of the Apollo Command and Service Module with the Lunar Module was carried out on the mision.
