Scott is emerging from the hatch of the Apollo 9 Command Module while in Earth orbit. He is connected to his spacecraft by an umbilical connection which supplies his oxygen and suit presure. The picture was taken by Rusell Schweickart from the entrance to the Lunar Module which is attached to the Command and Service Module. Schweickart had a self-contained environmental control system in his spacesuit. Apollo 9 was launched on 3rd March 1969, with astronauts James McDivitt, Scott and Schweickart on board. Apollo 9 carried the first complete Apollo spacecraft into Earth orbit, and the first docking of the Apollo Command and Service Module with the Lunar Module was carried out on the mision.
