This colour picture, showing the spacecraft's footpad and the photometric target, was constructed using three colour filters and three black and white negatives. Surveyor 3, launched on 17th April 1967, landed in the area of the Moon known as the Ocean of Storms and made the first excavation on the lunar surface using an on-board scoop. The Surveyor programme was one of three precursor unmanned lunar exploration programmes designed to pave the way for the Apollo manned Moon landings.
