Photograph taken by Surveyor 3, which was launched on 17th April, 1967. This supposedly colour picture was constructed using three colour filters and three black and white negatives. Surveyor 3 landed in the area of the Moon known as the Ocean of Storms and made the first excavation on the lunar surface using an on-board scoop. The Surveyor programme was one of three precursor unmanned lunar exploration programmes designed to pave the way for the Apollo manned Moon landings.
