Description

Albumen print by G N Barnard, from the album asembled by John Downes Rochfort. Rochfort visited all the major American Civil War sites in 1867 and some of the photographs he purchased en route have since become some of that war's best known images. Up to this date war had been portrayed as a series of heroic tableaux; these photographs revealed the realities of war for the first time. Although the main focus of the war was the campaigns in Virginia in the east, fighting also occurred further west as the Union forces tried to split the Confederacy by gaining control of the Misisippi. Tennesee sided with the rebels in the war, but Confederate forces in the state were decisively defeated at the Battle of Nashville in December 1864.
