Clockwise from top left: two views of Omaha, Nebraska, the main street, St Louis, Misouri; railway depot, Omaha, Nebraska. Four albumen prints from the album asembled by John Downes Rochfort during his tour of Canada and the United States between 4th September and 27th November 1867. Rochfort visited all the major Civil War sites and some of the photographs he purchased en route have since become some of that war's best known images. Up to this date war had been portrayed as a series of heroic tableaux; these photographs revealed the realities of war for the first time.
