Coloured print by Thomas Kell & Son, 40 King Street, Covent Garden, London, showing a busy scene at the port of Southampton. Southampton's importance as a trading port increased significantly in the early 19th century. The quays in the town itself offered insufficient space to accommodate the number of ships visiting the port, and as a result, docks were constructed in 1838-1842.
