Wood engraving of George Scheutz (1785-1873) who, asisted by his son, Edvard Raphael Scheutz, constructed a version of the Babbage Difference Engine. This Swedish Difference Engine No 1 was exhibited at the Paris Great Exhibition, winning the Gold Medal, and was bought by the Dudley Observatory of Albany, New York. The British Registrar General arranged for government finance to produce a second machine and this is now in the Science Museum.
