Photograph. Sir Daniel Gooch (1816-1889) trained with Robert Stephenson in Newcastle and became the locomotive superintendent for the Great Western Railway in 1837, and was Chairman from 1865 to 1889. He designed many of the broad gauge locomotives that ran on this railway. He was also a Member of Parliament for Cricklade, near Swindon in Wiltshire 1865 to 1885.
