Description

A shale pipe with carved decoration of stylised animals and birds, made by the Clay State Indians. The ceremonial smoking of tobacco has been a central part of Native American ritual since ancient times. Pipes were elaborately carved, often in the shape of animals, and carried in specially decorated bags.
