Replica probably made as a demonstration piece for the Science Museum, London, by Negretti and Zambra to the original design by Robert Hooke (1635-1703). While Hooke was an experimenter for the Royal Society from 1662, he converted the rise and fall of the mercury barometer into a rotation action for a needle on a dial.
