Pharmacy jar, Italian,1520-1560.

Description

This jar is from Deruta, a town near Perugia in central Italy, famous for manufacturing ceramics. It contained mercury ungent, or ointment. Mercurial ointment was first used for the treatment of skin diseases and later specifically for syphilis.
