Watercolour by George Childs (active 1826-1873). A steam locomotive hauling a train of carriages is seen travelling on raised tracks on the seafront, approaching a tunnel in the cliffside. Named after its asociations with William Shakespeare's play 'King Lear', the chalk cliff was formerly known as 'Hay Cliff' and now incorporates the Channel Tunnel, which runs from Kent to Calais, France.
