'London & Southampton Railway looking west near Whit Street, between Woking and Brookwood'. Watercolour by J Absolon, showing a view of the tracks between Woking and Brookwood in Surrey. The London & Southampton Railway Company was formed in 1831, with Joseph Locke (1805-1860) being appointed chief engineer, but it was not until 1837 that pasengers and goods began to be transported on the line between London and Southampton. The city of Southampton, which had previously been in a state of decline, was revived by the arrival of the railway.
