Oil painting by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) from the 'LMS at War' series, published in 1946, showing a steam locomotive pulling a goods train through a desert landscape against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Wilkinson studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. As well as being a famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR) and organised the Royal Academy series of posters for the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924.
