Oil painting by A H Fox of Sir Edward William Watkin (1819-1901). Watkin was chairman of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway 1864-1894, the South Eastern Railway 1866-1894, and the Metropolitan Railway 1872-1894. He was also a director of both the Great Western and the Great Eastern Railways, and at one time president of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada. He was chairman of the first Channel Tunnel Company and served as MP for Hythe, Kent from 1874-95. He was knighted in 1868 and became a baronet in 1880.
