Sir Richard Moon (1815-1899) was Chairman of the London and North Western Railway from 1861-1891 and founded the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Wales in asociation with George Asheton-Smith, a prominent local slate mine owner and landholder. The SMR was planned as an excursion railway for tourists wishing to see the Snowdon summit, and after little more than a year's work, was opened to the public in 1896.
