Oil painting from 1954 by Terence Tenison Cuneo (1907-1996) showing Richard Trevithick's (1771-1883) Pen-y-Darren locomotive and Francis Trevithick's Cornwall locomotive. The latter was built for the London & North Western Railway in 1847. Commisioned in 1803 by the Penydarren Ironworks at Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, Pen-y-Darren made the first of its three journeys on 21st February 1804, before the project was abandoned because the seven ton engine kept breaking the cast iron track.
