Description

This telescopic prismatic compas was made by Charles Schmalcalder. Magnetic compases are portable and easy to use for rapid survey where high accuracy is not required. Charles Schmalcalder took out a patent for a prismatic compas design in 1813. This example includes a telescope and spirit bubble.
