Model (scale 1:48). When studies indicated that the Saturn I rockets were unfeasible for a lunar mision, NASA decided to develop the masive, three-stage Saturn V. The first stage, powered by five F-1 engines, was 10.1m in diameter and 42m high. The second was the same diameter and 24.8m high and was powered by five J-2 engines, and the final stage used a single J-2 engine, which was fired twice during each mision and then sent into orbit round the Sun. A truncated cone shielded the Apollo module inside. The Saturn V was the largest rocket ever built, the height of a 36-storey building, and each rocket contained 3 million separate parts. It had a 100 % launch succes rate, and was used on all the Apollo misions to the Moon.
