Illustrated front cover of a timetable produced for the Great Northern Railway (GNR), showing a picture of GNR locomotive no 275, promoting expres routes from London to Scotland and the north of England. The GNR was formed in 1846 after the London & York Bill was pased by Parliament, and by 1870 was running more expres trains than any of its main rivals. The railway operated until 1923.
